How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business
There's no submit button and no ad you can buy. Getting named is the result of four things being true at once — here's each one, in order of leverage.
If you haven't diagnosed why you're currently invisible, start with our 7-reasons guide first — fixing the wrong thing wastes time. This post is the offense: what to actually build, once the basics are in place.
STEP 1Make sure you can be found at all
Before content quality matters, retrieval has to happen. That means your site is crawlable by AI bots (no accidental robots.txt block) and your business exists, claimed and consistent, in the data sources assistants and their underlying search partners actually draw from — Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect.
- robots.txt allows GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended
- Google Business Profile and Bing Places both claimed, with matching hours/address/phone
- Your site's
/sitemap.xmlexists and lists your real pages
Answer the exact questions your customers ask — in plain language, on your own site
A 2026 critical survey of the evidence base on this topic found that topical relevance and whether a page is actually retrieved into a model's context are the biggest, most reproducible levers currently documented — more than any formatting trick.
"Topical relevance and context position are the most reproducible levers... query-document relevance and rank within context are major determinants." — Optimizing Visibility in Generative Engines: A Critical Survey of Generative Engine Optimization, arXiv:2607.14035 (2026)
In practice: write the sentence a customer is actually looking for — your price, your service area, your hours, whether you do X — as the literal first sentence under the matching heading. Not a lead-in, the answer itself.
STEP 3Get named where the models already look
A brand describing itself is a weaker signal than an independent source confirming the same thing. Citation sources vary a lot by engine, and barely overlap between them — only around 11% of domains cited by ChatGPT are also cited by Perplexity — so this isn't one channel, it's several:
- Reddit — cited in roughly 40% of AI-engine answers overall, and Perplexity's single heaviest source. Answer real questions in your category, don't post ads.
- Comparison/review platforms (G2, Capterra, Product Hunt for SaaS; Yelp, BBB, industry directories for local) — genuine reviews matter more than volume.
- LinkedIn — underused relative to how often it's actually cited (14.3% of ChatGPT Search responses per one 325K-prompt study).
- Local/trade press — ChatGPT specifically over-indexes on established editorial sources.
Keep it fresh, and actually check
Sitemap recency and visible last-updated dates are reasonably well-evidenced factors in RAG-style retrieval — stale pages get deprioritized. And because the same question can get a different answer from the same engine on different runs, a single manual check doesn't tell you much either way. Check repeatedly, not once.
Watch does steps 1 and 4 for you automatically — daily checks across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with an alert the day something changes.
