Why isn't my business showing up on ChatGPT?

Ranking #1 on Google doesn't carry over. Here are the seven most common, most likely-first reasons an AI assistant isn't naming your business — and the direct fix for each.

Published 2026-08-09 · CitationLoop Research

Short version: an assistant can only name a business it can (1) crawl, (2) understand the exact answer from, and (3) see confirmed elsewhere. Google ranking touches none of those directly. Below is the order we'd check them in, most common first.

REASON 1 — MOST COMMON

The AI crawler is blocked before it ever reads your page

Cloudflare's popular "Block AI Bots" dashboard toggle disallows GPTBot, Google-Extended, and similar crawlers in robots.txt by default. A site can rank perfectly on Google and still be structurally invisible to an assistant — not because of anything written on the page, but because the page was never fetched.

Fix: Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check for any line disallowing GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot. If your host or CDN has an "AI bot blocking" setting, turn it off.

REASON 2

You're not in the data these assistants actually pull from

AI search largely rides on top of existing search indexes rather than building a new one from scratch — so if your business isn't well established in the index an assistant's search feature draws on, or in the local-business data sources (Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect), there's a real chance the assistant never retrieves you as a candidate in the first place, regardless of your own site's quality.

Fix: Confirm your Google Business Profile and Bing Places listings exist, are claimed, and have matching name/address/phone info to your website. This is separate from your website's own SEO.

REASON 3

Your site doesn't answer the actual question in plain language

Assistants tend to quote text that directly answers a question, not marketing copy that implies an answer. If your pricing page says "flexible solutions tailored to your needs" instead of an actual number, or your services page is a hero image and a contact form instead of a sentence, there's nothing quotable to cite.

Fix: Rewrite your key pages (services, pricing, hours, service area) so the first sentence under each heading directly answers the question a customer would ask out loud.

REASON 4

No structured data describing what your business is

Schema.org markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage) is a low-cost, machine-readable summary of what's on the page. It's the same fetch that's already happening, formatted so a machine doesn't have to guess.

Fix: Add LocalBusiness schema with your name, address, phone, hours, and services. Add FAQPage schema to any page that already has an FAQ section.

REASON 5

Nobody else is confirming you exist

A single company claiming things about itself is a weaker signal than the same claim showing up independently elsewhere — reviews, local directories, a mention in local press, a recommendation thread. Reddit alone is cited in roughly 40% of AI-engine answers across platforms, and is Perplexity's single heaviest source (about 1 in 5 citations).

Fix: Get listed (and keep info consistent) on the review/directory sites relevant to your category, and don't be afraid to answer real questions about your category on Reddit and similar forums — genuinely, not as an ad.

REASON 6

Your information is stale or inconsistent across the web

Different hours on your website vs. your Google listing, an old phone number still floating around on a directory you forgot about, no visible "last updated" date — all of it makes a page a worse candidate to cite than a fresher, more consistent one.

Fix: Do a 15-minute pass: search your business name, click the first 5 results, and fix anything that disagrees with your actual current hours, address, and phone number.

REASON 7 — LEAST LIKELY, BUT REAL

You're simply too new for the model to have "seen" you yet

Indexing and re-crawling both take time, and it varies by category and engine. A brand-new site or a business that changed its name recently may just be waiting its turn.

Fix: Fix everything else first — this one resolves itself, but only once the rest isn't blocking it.

Guessing which of these seven applies to you wastes time. We run the actual questions your customers ask through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and tell you exactly which one is holding you back.
